Hi, this is Al Bargen. For your book to sell there are eight critical principles of marketing you must follow. Writing it isn’t enough. But you know this. So what’s the pivotal principles of a best seller quality marketing?
In our experience these 8 qualities can separate you from everyone else.
1. Write the best book you can
Writing is obviously one part of your battle. But it’s a very, very critical part. Pouring your ‘heart and soul’ into your book, and doing all you can to create a work that is well written and engaging, even entertaining to read will have half the battle won. It makes little sense to use up scarce resources trying to sell a product that no one will want to read.
So write your book and write it well. Know what your readers want and give it to them. Offer them not just good content, but great content that keeps readers interested and gives them something they can use to make some part of their lives better.
2. Start your marketing early
Naturally, you want your book to launch in a hard core fashion. Your dream is to have droves of people lining up to buy it. For this to happen people need to become aware of the book. The problem most authors encounter is that they don’t start talking about their book until it is already published. This is the mistake I made when I wrote “Cheeseburger Abs”. I won’t make that mistake again, and you don’t have to either.
We all know how the successful author Tim Ferris is with his “4-Hour… ” brand. But did you know that he started marketing (talking about) his book: The Four-Hour Work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich, three whole years before he published it?
That’s a long time to build some buzz around a book, but it was worth it. To this day, four years after the book was launched, it still enjoys its ranking as one of Amazon’s best-selling non-fiction books.
3. Know your target market
Your target market is, in most situations, your reader. One exception is for instance if you’re writing for children when your buyers in most cases are the parents and not the readers themselves.
You obviously want to know your target customers, their buying habits as much as their perspectives on a certain problem, opportunity, desire, etc. What kinds of media do they subscribe to? Which blogs do they read and what TV shows do they watch? Do they frequent certain places and avoid others? Click here to read more on this topic in another blog post.
By answering these kind of questions, you’ll know which marketing techniques are best used. You’ll also know how to write the right marketing copy to appeal to the particular buyer’s senses.
4. Build a brand for yourself
Create an ultra-unique micro-niche for your book, something that not many authors have done before, and work that into all aspects of your marketing plan. In our “Hard Core Author Branding” series we discussed how to develop your USP. We also discussed that your branding is present in all that you do, and even in the things that you don’t do.
You get the idea? Whatever you do, involve your brand in it. Make it something that people will always know you for. Branding is so important that you may want to read our full series, and take notes as to how you can apply the information to build your specific brand.
