Have you been thinking of an idea for a story that you eventually want to turn into a book? Do you know how to effectively format a book so that it is ready to be published? Quite often prospective writers find themselves having a great idea but lacking the know-how pertaining to formatting their book. Below are 12 tips to consider when you begin turning your idea into a book.
1. Developing a Page Layout
The most important aspect of book formatting is to make sure that your pages have a great layout. Depending on the word processing program that you use, your options for formatting may differ. The two most important aspects that you will want to take into consideration are the margin and the size of the page.
2. Page Numbering
One of the most important things to consider are the numbers that will appear on the bottom of each of your pages. This is particularly important so that you can keep track of how long your novel is.
Generally headers are up to the preference of the author, though they are commonly found on every page of most novels.
4. Line Spacing
Another important aspect to formatting a book is the amount of spacing in between your lines. Double spacing isn’t necessary, therefore you should try to stick to single spacing.
5. Spacing Paragraphs
Much like line spacing, spacing paragraphs allows you to break up the texts. Depending on what you find to be aesthetically pleasing, there aren’t any particular rules associated with paragraph spacing.
6. Font Size
Depending on the amount of words that your book has, the size of your font will differ. Generally authors try not to have font sizes less than 11 pt.
7. Font Type
Your publisher will generally advise you of what type of font you should use for your book but either Arial or Times New Roman is preferred.
Based on the type of novel that you are writing, consider the indentation that each paragraph will receive.
9. Title Font
On the first page of your book you will want to display the title of your novel. Choose a font that coincides with the font used for the rest of the book.
10. Formatting the Front Page
As previously mentioned, most books have a front page. With that being said, decide what you want on this page. As an example, the name of your publisher, publishing date, descriptive text, etc.
11. Table of Contents
Some novelists prefer to add a table of contents to the beginning of their book so that readers can jump to a page, but this also depends on personal preference.
12. Choosing a Book Cover
The most important aspect of formatting your book is to make sure that you choose a book cover that you are happy with. Make sure that it is effective and helps to showcase what your novel is about.
