For authors who want to be among the top 4% highest paid, relationships matter. You can not go at it alone.

Your publishing team matters, your editing team matters, your book formatting team matters. But we all know that. Today instead we’ll focus on the people closer to you. People that directly or indirectly impact the content you write.

Hi it’s Nick Brodd here and to me relationships were never about quantity. It’s about quality. But what does quality relations mean? I think it is about having people around you that are remarkable enough to inspire your life. Or even better, people so incredibly awesome they are worth writing about.

For me one of those guys is my friend David. He’s the type of guy that will lift the spirit of any party. He boosts people’s energy. He has lived an active life. He is knowledgeable. He has traveled the world. He has a massive amount of intriguing stories to tell.

These are the kind of people we all need around us, whether we are authors or not. But for an author they also come with great side effects, such as:

  1. Productivity. They make you happy. When you’re happy you’re more productive.
  2. Story Telling. You can borrow their inspiring stories and write about them.
  3. Depth of Knowledge. They’ll enable you to dig deeper and find new insights about new topics.

On the other hand I also know people who are nothing but negative. You know the type, the ones that drag other people down. The type that know how to suck life and energy out of anything positive.

I don’t judge these people. And while I find it unproductive to spend a lot of my time with them there is something to be learnt even from their pity parties.

You can use their negativity to inspire your future writing as well. Whatever problems they see, maybe others are having them as well, but on a lower level? Write about them. Just like I’m doing right now! J

I don’t, like some people do, advocate dumping old friends. But I do encourage spending more time with positive inspiring people who are supportive of your endeavors.

Growing the right relationships can do more for your writing and for your life than maybe anything else. Start cultivating more high quality relationships today. Get more friends worth writing about!
