Essentially you want to keep your “fan-base” engaged so they stick with your while you are developing your new projects.

Right now! Whether you are just starting your writing journey or if you are a seasoned writer, everyone needs new readers, subscribers, fan base. Your goal right now is to develop a strong following so your current projects and future projects get exposure. So start right now.
Define your brand.
Define who you are, what you want to write about, your niche, or who you want to end up being when you reach the level you want to reach as a writer. Defining your brand tells your following what they can expect from you time and time again. Keeping your brand strong and true to the type of person you are will ensure that you keep a strong following.
Find your audience
In order to find your audience you want to determine who can benefit or find pleasure in what you write. Determining who your book or project will appeal to maybe a difficult process depending on your subject matter, but once you have a good grasp on who will be a buyer you can tailor the rest of the process to fit.
Get a website or blog.
The easiest way to get this going is to create a WordPress site. WordPress is one of the easiest most adaptable platforms to use. There are tons of tutorials online that will walk you through processes like setting up a theme to have a design for your website that you like to getting subscribers.
Speaking of subscribers, you need to set up an email list.
When people visit your website you want to have a system to capture their information so when you have a new blog post, project, or book released you can send them an email to notify them. Why do you want to email them? So they can buy your new project.
Set up your social media presence
Social media has become the new “It” when it comes to advertising. Many people are using social media to market their products. Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube are all multimillion dollar companies and more and more people are using them to get their news and more.
