Hi Nick Brodd here. Amazon is powerful. Make a few mistakes and it’s got the clout to destroy your sales. On the other hand if you do everything right, it can help your sales to sky rocket.
Deciding on what Amazon category to publish in is one of those areas where making the right choices really count. It’s a decision you must take carefully.
Here’s how it works. Next to searches, browsing categories is how most customers find the books they buy on Amazon. So the question is simply, how does one score high in a category?
When you put your book on Amazon you’re allowed to list in two categories. That’s what you should do, as it maximizes your chances to reach as many customers as possible.
If you’ve read our previous posts you know we suggest launching your book with KDP Select and give the book away for free for up to 5 days. Once you reach bestseller ranking in your category, Amazon will reward you and start advertise you as a best seller.
Your chances for increased long-term sales at this stage has massively improved.
Within each broad category there are sub-categories. By clicking on each of the books in each of the sub-categories you potentially could publish in, you can figure out which sub-categories are most competitive.
You do this by looking for the books “Best Seller Rank”. The higher the number, the easier it is to beat that competitor.
In other terms, you’ll want to pick a sub-category that’s less competitive so that it’s easier to get a very high ranking. The exact rank to look for differs in each section so you’ll have to do the research and see how all competing books actually rank.
Amazon primarily ranks books based on their sales. Improve your sales and you’ll automatically rank better.
Down the road you can therefore maximize this strategy by jumping categories. Once your book has a proven sales track record and gets to the top of a less competitive category, you can switch your book’s category to one that has more traffic and gets more sales.
Using book categories is one of many strategies. That said it’s an important one. Learn to use it and you’ll have one more tool in your toolbox that can make you a best seller.
